Activist prevents Israeli officer from arresting Palestinian child

During Sunday’s Jerusalem Day events, a Palestinian boy, perhaps 10 years old, was chased down an East Jerusalem street by a very angry officer of the Border Police. The boy tripped and fell, then picked himself up just as the Border Police officer reached him and tried to grab him. But a 22 year-old female Israeli activist prevented the boy’s arrest by throwing herself between the two, allowing the Palestinian boy to flee.

Jerusalem Day is meant to be a celebration of the city’s ‘reunification’ following Israel’s victory in the 1967 war. In practice, it is a day for Israeli nationalists, draped in flags, dancing in circles, singing and chanting (including the popular Israeli nationalist chant, ‘death to Arabs’) as they march through the streets of East Jerusalem and the Old City. Many of the Jewish demonstrators are bused in from right-wing yeshivas in Israel and the West Bank

This year, an Orthodox Jewish man grabbed the Palestinian flag from the hands of a 10 year-old boy and refused to return it. The boy, enraged, tried to prise it out of the Jewish man’s hands. A Border Police officer, seeing the struggle between a 10 year-old Palestinian boy and a fully grown Jewish man, chased the Palestinian boy rather than ordering the Jewish man to return the flag. Someone made a montage of the incident and posted it on Facebook, with commentary. Note the expression of rage in the Border Police officer’s eyes, as seen in the second photo.

In the end the boy got away, due to the intervention of a 22 year-old Israeli activist from Jerusalem named Sahar Vardi, who threw herself in front of the Border Police officer just as he was about to grab the child. Photojournalist Haim Schwarczenberg caught the incident.

The incident was also filmed and the clip posted on Youtube.

I have spoken to countless lawyers and they have yet to discover any cases in Florida where an African American was able to successfully use the ‘Stand Your Ground Law’ defense in a hearing. Another step I will take is to call for a study into racial disparities in the application of this law. What I didn’t see in the courtroom today is mercy or justice. The three-year plea deal from Angela Corey is not mercy and a mandatory twenty-year sentence is not justice. I hope that the people will come to Marissa’s defense as the system has so utterly failed her. This is just the beginning, not the end.

via dizzypie, saneoldsameold.

reblobbed side by side because this is fucking important.

you cannot be an ally if you ever use ‘gay’ as an insult.

and the noh8 campaign should be held accountable (ha!) for allowing someone who is so blatantly (hetero/cis)sexist/binarist to appear in their campaign.

apparently the no h8 picture is just a good shoop?

feministdisney:

just to make note, I followed through and checked what someone said in a re-blog and they are right: Swift never posed for NOH8, the photo was fake/edited, so they (the campaign) did nothing wrong there since they never actually allowed it to happen.

But I’m leaving the original post up since I think it explains real quickly why popular song lyrics like that are a problem either way.

Don’t Expel Bullied Gay Teen!
Darnell “Dynasty” Young has been bullied for months — it has sometimes gotten so bad that he has thought about suicide.
His mother contacted the school but instead of taking appropriate action, asked Darnell to “tone down” his accessories. That is victim blaming.
Not knowing what to do, his mother sent him to school with a stun gun because he didn’t feel safe. On April 16, 6 students surrounded him threatening violence. He pulled out the stun gun and raised it in the air, setting off an electric charge. He did not use it on anyone — he simply scared them away, protecting himself.
Young was soon arrested and taken away in handcuffs. He is now facing expulsion from the school.
Please tell Arsenal Technical High School to not expel Young — who hurt no one and was just trying to protect himself — and to change their school’s bullying policy to offer more protection for LGBT youth. No one should feel unsafe at school!
