Utilizing a holistic model, Casa’s mission is to support the emotional, spiritual, physical and intellectual development of womyn and their health needs related to their experiences of abuse and neglect. Casa has two core constituencies: young and adult womyn of color living in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx as well as young and adult womyn of color organizers on the frontline (e.g. activists, social workers, teachers, etc.).

Casa Atabex Aché - House of Womyn's Power

"When neo-soul singer Erykah Badu announced her third pregnancy in 2008, some fans attacked her for..."

“
When neo-soul singer Erykah Badu announced her third pregnancy in 2008, some fans attacked her for having children outside of marriage with more than one father. One online commenter labeled the singer, known for rocking a mega ’fro, ‘trash with great hair.’ A Zimbio.com article that referred to Badu’s ‘growing list of baby daddies’ featured a ‘Knocked Up Again’ headline. A blog article wondered baldly if the singer was ‘a ho.’ She was derided as a poor example of black womanhood. The storm got so heavy that Badu bit back in a lengthy and poetically unapologetic online post about her family that ended with an entreaty to ‘Kiss my placenta.’

Three years later, when Beyoncé announced she was expecting, she was publicly applauded for doing pregnancy ‘the right way,’ and celebrated for being a model of black womanhood. Even Diddy’s 18-year-old son, Justin Combs, weighed in on Bey’s proper use of her uterus. Combs tweeted: ‘Beyoncé dated, married, THEN got pregnant…young ladies take notes.’ (No word on whether Combs’s dad, who has never married but has five children, is also taking notes.)
”

-
Tamara Winfrey Harris

As a black male, I can assure you this criticism, from the black community at least is warranted. Marriage in the black community is almost non existent. If role models, like the Great Ms. Badu has multiple baby daddies, then what are the black youth supposed to do. People think that you can’t love something and be critical of it at the same time.

Marriage…unions between 2 people….they’re necessary!

(via vivalaevolucion)

sigh. no. shut up. you never tell someone that the way they’re living is WRONG. unless they’re oppressing someone else with their actions, you have no right to comment on what they do. & your “marriage in the black community is almost non-existent” bit is not true & a stereotype. i know plenty of black married folks. black womyn are not your or the black community’s mammys!! are you paying her bills? are you helping to raise her children? then once again, you dont get to tell someone their life is WRONG. its not erykah’s job to serve the “black youth” by which you probably mean young black boys, by doing something she doesn’t want to do or changing herself. you can get that sick, twisted idea of liberation up outta here. control your own life.

(via hiphopcheerleader)

uggh so called conscious brothers come get your people. time to come collect the garbage, i.e vivalaevolucion. they’re up to their slut shaming, black motherhood policing ways, family structure erasing again!!

Charles Henri Joseph Cordier

Cordier was born in Cambrai. In 1847, a meeting with Seïd Enkess, a former black slave who had become a model, determined the course of his career.

His first success was a bust in plaster of a Sudanese man “Saïd Abdullah of the Mayac, Kingdom of the Darfur” (Sudan). This was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1848, the same year that slavery was abolished in all French colonies. It is now housed at the The Walters Art Museum.

In 1851, Queen Victoria bought a bronze of it at the Great Exhibition of London. From 1851 to 1866, he served as the official sculptor of Paris’s National History Museum, creating a series of spectacularly lifelike busts for their new ethnographic gallery (now housed in the Musee de l’Homme, Paris).

Cordier took part in the great works commissioned by the Second French Empire (Paris Opera, Musée du Louvre, the Hôtel de Ville) or by private interests such as Baron de Rothchild. He died in Algeria.

Lucecita (Luz Esther Benítez) - musician and activist.

Lucecita was blacklisted from Puerto Rican television during the early 1970s for her refusal to whiten her appearance and for her support of revolutionary movements in Puerto Rico and Cuba (many Puerto Rican television stations were owned and staffed primarily by white cuban exiles). In response to the harsh criticism she drew due to her adoption of what was referred to by the Puerto Rican press as ‘the African look’, Lucecita released songs that rejected eurocentrism and celebrated the African heritage of Puerto Rico. She also transgressed gendered boundaries by performing in ‘masculine’ outfits, such as suits and tuxedos, which were traditionally never worn by women on stage. In addition to her outfits, Lucecita often used masculine adjectives in her songs and interviews, sometimes interchanging between masculine and feminine. The catholic church and homophobia were also targets of Lucecita, both of which she openly criticized throughout the 1970s.
